In the first half of 2024, we saw tremendous growth and momentum here at Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) in Devens, Massachusetts.

In the third video in our series of updates from inside CFS, CEO Bob Mumgaard and VP of Production Darby Dunn share our latest momentum on our path of commercialized fusion energy. Over the past six months, we’ve:

  • Kicked off installation of equipment in Tokamak Hall
  • Grown our team to 800 and counting, making us one of the largest fusion organizations in the world
  • Doubled the rate of manufacturing on our toroidal field (TF) and poloidal field (PF) magnet manufacturing lines
  • Finished manufacturing our central solenoid model coil (CSMC) for a key upcoming test

Public-private partnerships are moving in the right direction with the recent signing of the Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program, of which we’re the largest recipient. This took place in June 2024 when CFS joined other fusion leaders, researchers, and Biden Administration officials at the White House to mark the second anniversary of the administration’s Bold Decadal Vision for Commercial Fusion Energy.

Fusion energy is now on the center stage globally, with a unifying agreement at the G7 for all fusion entities to work together so fusion power plants designed and built in one location can be built around the world. The momentum doesn’t stop here. What’s next? We plan to announce the location for ARC, which we expect will be the world’s first fusion power plant.
